Fusing Art and Entrepreneurship
“Business is the hidden truth in art,” says Shane Baker. From fine
art through broadcast production, the founder of Red i Designs LLC
has a history of turning artistic instinct into profit and recognition
for corporate, non-profit and media clients.
He began as a painter and illustrator: born and raised in New York,
he moved to the Washington, D.C. area to be closer to documentary
producers like clients National Geographic Television and Discovery
Networks. “I started painting murals for homes and businesses in
the area,” he says, “and that work quickly led to my personal computer
revolution.”
Clients who appreciated his innovative designs supported his migration
from paint to computer design and animation – lifting him to prominence
as an artist, animator and editor. He provided graphic design, art
direction and animation services for several national and international
clients, including six Emmy award-winning commercial spots and one
Emmy award-winning long-format documentary (National Geographic Television,
“Pearl Harbor”).
Growing Revenue and Client Base in Washington, D.C.
At Henninger Media Services, the largest post-production network
in the Mid-Atlantic region, Shane established a loyal following of
broadcast and government clients (including ABC, MSNBC and the Social
Security Administration) and was soon promoted to Creative Director.
In that position, he grew the multi-location graphics department,
offering clients an expanded menu of services that could be applied
to any media. The response was dramatic: income in that department
rose by a factor of ten while Shane served.
A successful artist and businessman, Shane was invited to lecture
at Virginia’s George Mason University. There, he spoke to graphic
design students and returned to critique their final projects and
portfolios.
